Those are great pictures. I was in Uncle Shorty's Bunk Blackwood, probably the year earlier - 1st trip. If you happen to have a picture from that encampment, I would love to see it. Its remarkable how well preserved you managed to keep those pictures. WOW!

By the way, I recognize one of those names, Al Lowenstein, who hasn't checked into this site yet, so I'm going to track him down now and I am sure he'll be checking in Shorty, I mean shortly.

The Polis Twins !!!! Joel was last seen going down your chimney to clean it out !!! One of the few remaining chimney sweeps in the world!!! And Terry can be seen in reruns of Northern Exposure as the son of the Old Lady Store Keeper !!!! and several other TV and Film roles !!! I think I got the names to the right professions ...so it could be vice versa !?

I went to SGF when I was 11-13 which would have been 1968-1970.I afraid i don't have a good memory of any campers.I remember the airplane candy drop. I do have some memories of camp activities.I guess the main thing is I was a camper at SGF and i had some great times.

Just a reminder that SGF, its memories, this site, and all future activities belong to all SGF-ers. Although you may see a few frequently-mentioned names, everyone is welcome to participate.

Please show up at activities, come to the 2009 Overnighter, whatever you can do to honor your camp and - in Pop Friedman's words - "give to others what you once were given."

Yes, the guy on the far right was my uncle Mendal Ettinger (aka Uncle Dempsey). He's the one I thank for giving me and my sister (cindy) the opportunity to experience camp. Boy, what a life lasting experience it has been. My vivid memory of my uncle was every Friday nite at the dell. I'd look in the back of all the benches and saw him there! He'd smile at me and I knew all was OK at home with my mom. He was proud I was at camp and LOVED it.

What happened to Pop Freidman's entry on the guestbook? I saw it there a few days ago and then suddenly it's gone. I noticed Pop mentioned that Pinaud after-shave in his note and I wanted to let him know i still use that stuff; what a great smell. Not as good as that early morning SGF smell but nonetheless it does bring back some of those old cortical memories.
Happy Holidays to all!!

Pop is unfamiliar with Internet 'netiquette' and felt that his post might have been inappropriate, like an old-fashioned burlesque monologue. Someone even called his message 'a load of schmaltz,' so he asked us to remove it. We'll try to persuade him to re-post.

Update: Pop reluctantly re-posted his message.

He also asked whether counselors locking themselves out of their cars is a new SGF tradition.

If it happens again next year, it'll become a tradition.

to: 'All the SGF Boys' <all.the.boys@sgfvc.org>
subject: I'm just 'kvelling' up here
date: Chanukah 5769

Boys,

I've been watching SGF from up here for many years, and I must say that I'm just kvelling over what this little thing of ours has become. Just when I thought that SGF tanked, here you go, bringing it back again. The looks on the faces of those kids at the 2008 Overnighter... that's what our camp is all about. Well done!

After all these years - almost 90 - I'm still a bit embarrassed about the name of the camp - SGF. I told Troop 95 to name it after Ben Kutcher - the BFK Vacation Camp. Ben was a terrific pool player, good at volleyball, a great swimmer, and he was the best dressed kid in Troop 95. You'd never see Ben out in the evening without a matching tie and pocket handkerchief and wearing some Ed. Pinaud aftershave. But, who listens, so they named it after me instead - me, who always had a little mustard stain on my shirt.

I apologize for not contacting you sooner, but - would you believe it - we just got our Internet connection last week. And it's only dial-up! You would think that we'd be shoved to the front of the line, but no, we had to wait until they finished wiring Norristown. And the equipment they gave us - I think it just came off lease from a Somalian refugee camp. The keyboards are full of all kinds of schmutz - betel nut seeds, sticky fishhead sauce - and there are no flat screen monitors. What's worse, they block some of the good websites. But, finally getting wired does give me a chance to tell you what's what.

Before I forget, call me 'Pop' if we meet up here some day. Not 'Pops' - I get a little edgy when people call me that - and I want us all to be friends. Most of you will arrive here some day. Well, not all - they are pretty particular about admitting pushy insurance agents and financial advisors; a lot of them get turned away and end up - you know where - at that big shvitz in the sub-basement.

For the rest of you, don't be afraid about meeting me some day because it's not that bad up here, aside from the lousy Internet connection. They have a Jewish Wing for those who think it's important to be among their own people; sorry, but Reform, Conservative and Orthodox are all mixed together which means that they sometimes serve bacon bits at the Oneg Shabbat. It is what it is. They have a candy drop every year, although they just drop slices of halvah wrapped in wax paper because of stricter insurance requirements. They have a pretty competitive softball league and they don't allow those lousy aluminum bats - that's a big plus. No flush toilets because most of the plumbers get turned away at the gate; instead we have these giant outhouses - do not enter without a fly swatter. Fortunately, a lot of our SGF boys learned to hold it in for weeks.

But - and pay attention to this - up here we look exactly as we did on the day that we died. In my day, we pretty much believed that when you went to heaven, you reverted to the best looking day of your life, but that just isn't so. It's a real horror show! Did you know that whiskers continue to grow for a few days after the body dies? So even if we were clean-shaven the day we cashed-in, we all have a three day beard growth. The men look like that guy from 'Miami Vice' - what's his name - Don Johnson.

It's worse for the women. All previous marriages are null and void up here, so you can start all over - or play the field. Great, I thought - up here we could pick from the creme de la creme - the kind of girl who wouldn't even talk to us in high school. Hah! Those 'untouchable' girls are 89 years old - minimum - with too much hair spray, hair dye, crusty makeup, and those little chin whiskers. And none of them drive at night. Even worse, most of them waited too long between hair colorings, so you see a lot of gray or black roots up here. Tell your wife or girlfriend to get her hair color touched up every other week when she suspects that cash-in time is near.

So we end up watching a lot of TV sports, but - I kid you not - our cable only carries Bengals and Reds games. Maybe the channels are better in the sub-basement.

Back to SGF. I'm so proud of the traditions that you have kept going, proud that you want to give to others what you once were given. Do the best you can and cheer for our camp, boys.

Pop

I was at SGF for 5 summers from 1962 - 1967. Loved Indian Ridge and Casset Hill. Candy Drop and Indian Ceremonial.
I was also on the ill-fated trip to Canada and the Montreal Expo, where Uncle Walt and Doug crashed while out for supplies, and as a result, Doug died. It was tragic, and we were all scared and in shock. It could have been any of us. On top of that, Walt's brother drove up to rescue us and we completed out trip with him to the Expo.

smile Hello Uncle Shorty - take a look at post no. 718. Glad to see you're doing well in Lakeland, FL. You were one of my favorite counselers - my second year at SGF, probably in 1961 or 1962. Hope you remember me.

I think I do -- Artie -- skinny kid with pointy little nose? -- but I wish I could find my photos from 1962 to be sure. We'll have to compare notes sometime.

frown To my SGF Bretheren,
God bless Gene Udell and God bless SGF!!!He and all of his generation blazed the path and built the camp that we have all come to know and love.We owe a debt of gratitude to Gene for helping to make all of our experiences, dreams and memories come true.I'm saddened and heartbroken that another link in the chain is gone. It's up to us now to carry on the traditions of the Black and Gold!!
To Gene,

Dr Gene Udell was my Professor at Temple University in 1980. He taught Science Education. He was a great guy and an outstanding educator.

Ironically, I didn't know at the time he was a counselor at SGF at the time. We would have had a lot to talk about.

EUGENE UDELL - IN MEMORIAM

Thanks to Alan Saionz for passing on the sad news about Gene Udell's death. We just saw Gene last month at the 26th Annual SFG Reunion. He wanted to attend so much that he had himself transported to Val's house in an ambulance.

See Gene's obituary and tribute on the SGFVC website.

Hi SGF Brothers:
I made reservations at the Red Lion Diner 1520 Easton Rd Horsham, Pa.
(215-674-5849) for Sunday breakfast 11/16/2008 at 9:30 a.m. The diner is located at the intersection of Rt.611 & County Line Rd. across the Willow Grove Air Station.I was guessing that at least ten guys would make it. Just another opportunity to toss fond memories around with a bunch of pals. It's nice to see new activity in the guestbook. I can be reached at

Wow Uncle Ramps, I can't believe it.
I remember you well and the energy and enthusiasm you brought to camp.

Some of my fondest memories from camp days are of you being crazy on stage at the Dell. I can clearly remember you sitting in a chair onstage, while a camper cracked eggs on your head and squirted ketchup in your socks. That's what gave me the idea for the crazy "SGF haircut" routine we did onstage this past summer at the 08' Overnighter (see, pictures on this site).

I remember you eating razor blades and then eating a piece of thread. Then you pulled the thread back out of your mouth and all the razor blades were attached to it.

I also remember you doing mind reading where you and another counselor (Uncle Murf?) spoke this crazy language and in the end you knew what the camper had secretly told him.

I'm really glad you signed in and will look forward to getting together with you to cheer for our camp. It would be awesome to have you join us in '09.

NON-SGF (BUT POSSIBLY RELATED) CONTENT

My friend Art sent me this link for a 2nd & Cheltenham (mostly Jewish kids) neighborhood reunion. He and I are too old - imagine that, but some SGF-ers may be interested.

That web page features a very large list of kids who were born between 1951 and 1968 and what happened to them. It is probably a good place to search for missing SGF-ers from those birth years.

Hey There:
I am trying to get an e-mail address for Steve Funt. I was an SGFer, also in the hall of fame, as well as Steve is. My time was 1964-1974. Most would know me by my moniker "Uncle Ramps" Long story how I got that name. I also know why there was no bunk "J". I also know how to swallow the razor blades. Learned that from Uncle Boozie, (Robert Klien) I did. Anyhow, if you look at the SGF brochure, that guy standing at the bottom of the slide with the pole was me.
Please pass this along to Steve, I will dig out some stuff to add to this site, and mark my calendar for 2009
Wow, is this terrific

Dear Ramps,

I do remember you, although you were never my counselor.

I seem to remember that your name was derived from a story you told of Lincoln high which didn't have steps, but lots of Ramps.

Am I close?

WHAT a memory about Lincoln High School. You are Correct. There were 9 Steven's on staff that year, nicknames sort of just came up: Steve Lonker loved jello" and became "Uncle Wiggly", Steve Chanin was always Raven, Another Steve watched Dark Shadows: Uncle Barnabas, Steve Franz was dubbed "Uncle Charlie for Charles Degaull, the then President of France, and so it went.

Uncle Steve Funt may be e-mail phobic. Both he and a Somali desert tribesman appear to be the last unconnected people on earth. However, you probably can see the real Funt this Sunday morning at the Red Lion Diner (see notice on this site's home page). He's been a big part of SGF's rise from the ashes. Alternately, Spencer can put you in touch with him.

I have returned from three years in Iraq. I was contacted by a former SGF camper several days ago as I was unable to attend the reunion. However, as I have lived on Maui for many years, I was thrilled to find that the spirit of SGF was still alive and well. Please feelfree to contact me at any time. I recognize many names but putting photos and names together is more chgallenging. I wish that I could attend the upcoming reunion but, alas, I am on Maui. Best wishes for the holidays to all.

Craig, I don't know if you remember me, or not, but you were my counselor in '73 (or so) in Bunk 2 with either Dane Cherry or Mitch Miller.

I remember vividly you going out in the woods during an overnighter to find Jay Axelrod who got lost. Later in years I swore it was all a set up to scare the crap out of us. Just recently speaking with Jay, he admitted he truly got lost in the woods!

This is just some of the SGF magic that still persists, and we are trying to recreate!

Hi all and Happy New Year! Well we certainly have had a great great year, especially with our First Trip '08!

I can't begin to tell you how rewarding this journey back to the future has been. There's some fantastic guys running this new show and you are certainly invited to join in.

We are planning First Trip '09 already. It's hard to imagine what it takes to put together one weekend let alone 3 - 3 week trips...but hey, who knows...we might just find out!

Our next planning session is November 16th at the Red Lion Diner in Horsham. We're even talking about incorporating...so you can see it's as serious as it is fun.

If you've signed in before, sign in again. Where's Craig Handfinger? Art "Rocketman" Sanders...Mike the Rabbi, Birdy...and others.

Waiting to hear from you all!

Peace,

Well said, Spencer.

And where are the hundreds of campers and staff that made SGF so great in the 1950s? With few exceptions, they've been silent.

At a time when your 401-K is tanking, Medicare costs are rising, your adult children are moving back home with you and you're waking up more often in the middle of the night... here is something - SGF - to warm the cockles of your hearts.

Please step up to the plate. SGF needs your energy and ideas.

A somewhat smaller group at Val Udell's home, but still an opportunity to meet the men who built many of our camp's traditions. And I got to meet Uncle Burt Blender, one of the great counselors from when I was eight years old.

Being there was so important to Gene Udell that he had himself transported in an ambulance. That is SGF dedication!

Hey Uncle Slim. I was one of your campers. I don't remember which year. I must've been very young because I thought that was your real name, until now.

Welcome aboard.

Now we need to find the whereabouts of Uncle Shorty.

That was easy . . . It's amazing to ready so many retellings of memories I share, and names of folks I haven't seen for nearly 50 years!

Too many memories to list here, but here's one: I played the role of rabbi at Uncle Max's "funeral." (For years, my parents would share some of the food columns he wrote under the pen name, Fatty R. Bockol.) When one of our younger campers woke with night terrors, we wondered if we'd gone a little overboard on Mystery Night that year.

Geoffrey,

Your cousin was OHS principal after I was graduated (Jan 1961). Our principal was the purple-haired Marian Stuart.

I met Merv Crimmins many years later through my late cousin Shirley Kaufman who worked at OHS. She threw an annual New Years Day party for her OHS colleagues and relatives so he and I crossed paths a few times. She liked your cousin very much.

Meeting former teachers (some of mine were there) adult-to-adult was a strange experience, particularly since a few of them disciplined me in high school. No matter how old I was, I still felt like a smart-ass kid in their presence.

Good to see you in the Guestbook.

At the risk of feeling very, very, old, Marian Stuart's nickname was the BLUE haired virgin.

You're right. Her hair just looked purple through my high school haze. Mur, you must be close to my vintage because Miss Stuart was pastured out during the sixties.

I have known Val it seems like all my life. I last saw him at my grandmothers (Rose Brown)100th b-day, almost 10 years ago. I attended SGF only one year, 1966, while Val was still at Maribel.

Seeing this website brings back warm feeling of my visits to SGF.

My great-uncle, Dr. Sam Denenberg and many of his siblings were very active in this camp.

Glad to see that it is still thriving after all of these years.
