Now that our ace team tracked down Oneal, let's find out what Uncle Ox (Larry Oxenberg)is up to. If anyone knows his whereabouts, please request that he check in.

Uncle Ox was an all star counselor from the mid 1960's who deserves a page of his own.

Art Scherr and I are still looking for him. Update: we finally smoked him out (see his post above). We'll soon enshrine him in the Counselors HOF.

I can't tell you how happy I was to happen onto your website. I have nothing but wonderful memories of my time at SGF.

From playing on Terry Dane's Canadians to the car-pull in the Maccabee Games, from the Doctor Ron Rhodes to Murray Kramer scaring the crap out of everyone at Indian Ceremonial, from surviving Bunk Featherhead to watching the Taj get hit by lighting, SGF left indelible memories in me. I will dig up some photos, scan them and send them. Thanks for keeping SGF going.

Does anybody remember those winter weekend encampments which first started in the mid 1960's? We were housed in the only two heated bunks in the camp - Bunks I and K. As I was out and about today, I was thinking about those cold and beautiful days at the camp. What great memories! wink wink wink wink

It was a collaborative effort between Uncle Shorty and me. We found that two half-wits equal one full wit. Of course, he went to Central High.

Hopefully, contacting his sister will draw him out of the woodwork.

There was a mix-up - two restaurants with similar names. Karl assured us that this restaurant is pristine, and I confirmed that via the Internet. However, since I rented the cockroach for two months, it seems like a waste of money to remove it.

Check out post no. 128 from Neal's sister. As of a couple of years ago he was living in Jamaica. He should definitely be included on the all star counselor list and I was never in any of his bunks. I just sent her a request to see what she can do to ask him to check in. I would love to hear from him.

A lot of the campers from the '50s must have early dementia because they're missing in action. I was there when you were, but I was only eight years old, so not on the Hill. My grandmother asked a Hill kid - Jerry Bratman - to look after me. Does that name ring a bell?

Anyway, please look around the website, post more memories, even get involved in rebuilding the camp.

Al (may I call you Al?),

Your new head looks great. Don't let them mock you or Cary. You look like a younger version of that movie guy - what's his name? - Curly.

I was prematurely bald when I founded Troop 95. I like to think that I started an SGF tradition: Boozie, Hoff, Brait, Blass, Dorfman, Kleiman (not sure about Dempsey's nephew - he usually wears a cap - what's he hiding?), and now Saionz. We had a guy in Troop 95 - Jules Frumkin. Jules was as bald as a cue ball by the time he was 19, but he dressed sharp, smelled of Ed. Pinaud cologne and always did well with the ladies.

But Al - this is important - Jules never locked himself out of his car. Next Overnighter, pin your keys to your boxer shorts. It worked for Jules.

Make it great!

There may be multiple versions of a song, although the SGF anthem ought to be constant. I'll pose the question to our patriarch Uncle Herman. In the meantime, I added Cary's version to the Songs and Traditions website page.

Ted Radinsky just posted this version "Cheer for our camp boys, our camp must win. She's a corker with lots of vim god bless her all those will surely flee when we begin to fight cheer for camp SGF."

The SGF anthem has popped to the top of the critical list, now that my net worth has tanked and is out of control.

OK, Scott, we added a search engine to the sgfvc.com website.

Mouse over ABOUT in the left side navigation. You will see a secondary fly-out menu with eight items. The last item will be SITE SEARCH. Click it and you'll be able to find anything on this site. Note that this is a Google search so some pages may not yet have been archived by Google's bot.

(762) LOOKING FOR UNCLE MIKE EPSTEIN

The orthodontic-challenged kid on the back row of one of Uncle Mike's pictures looks like me. Or it could be some other buck-toothed kid. I'd like to ask Uncle Mike when that picture was taken.

Would someone please put me in touch with him?

Thanks.

Those are great pictures. I was in Uncle Shorty's Bunk Blackwood, probably the year earlier - 1st trip. If you happen to have a picture from that encampment, I would love to see it. Its remarkable how well preserved you managed to keep those pictures. WOW!

By the way, I recognize one of those names, Al Lowenstein, who hasn't checked into this site yet, so I'm going to track him down now and I am sure he'll be checking in Shorty, I mean shortly.

I went to SGF when I was 11-13 which would have been 1968-1970.I afraid i don't have a good memory of any campers.I remember the airplane candy drop. I do have some memories of camp activities.I guess the main thing is I was a camper at SGF and i had some great times.

Just a reminder that SGF, its memories, this site, and all future activities belong to all SGF-ers. Although you may see a few frequently-mentioned names, everyone is welcome to participate.

Please show up at activities, come to the 2009 Overnighter, whatever you can do to honor your camp and - in Pop Friedman's words - "give to others what you once were given."

Yes, the guy on the far right was my uncle Mendal Ettinger (aka Uncle Dempsey). He's the one I thank for giving me and my sister (cindy) the opportunity to experience camp. Boy, what a life lasting experience it has been. My vivid memory of my uncle was every Friday nite at the dell. I'd look in the back of all the benches and saw him there! He'd smile at me and I knew all was OK at home with my mom. He was proud I was at camp and LOVED it.

What happened to Pop Freidman's entry on the guestbook? I saw it there a few days ago and then suddenly it's gone. I noticed Pop mentioned that Pinaud after-shave in his note and I wanted to let him know i still use that stuff; what a great smell. Not as good as that early morning SGF smell but nonetheless it does bring back some of those old cortical memories.
Happy Holidays to all!!

Pop is unfamiliar with Internet 'netiquette' and felt that his post might have been inappropriate, like an old-fashioned burlesque monologue. Someone even called his message 'a load of schmaltz,' so he asked us to remove it. We'll try to persuade him to re-post.

Update: Pop reluctantly re-posted his message.

He also asked whether counselors locking themselves out of their cars is a new SGF tradition.

If it happens again next year, it'll become a tradition.

to: 'All the SGF Boys' <all.the.boys@sgfvc.org>
subject: I'm just 'kvelling' up here
date: Chanukah 5769

Boys,

I've been watching SGF from up here for many years, and I must say that I'm just kvelling over what this little thing of ours has become. Just when I thought that SGF tanked, here you go, bringing it back again. The looks on the faces of those kids at the 2008 Overnighter... that's what our camp is all about. Well done!

After all these years - almost 90 - I'm still a bit embarrassed about the name of the camp - SGF. I told Troop 95 to name it after Ben Kutcher - the BFK Vacation Camp. Ben was a terrific pool player, good at volleyball, a great swimmer, and he was the best dressed kid in Troop 95. You'd never see Ben out in the evening without a matching tie and pocket handkerchief and wearing some Ed. Pinaud aftershave. But, who listens, so they named it after me instead - me, who always had a little mustard stain on my shirt.

I apologize for not contacting you sooner, but - would you believe it - we just got our Internet connection last week. And it's only dial-up! You would think that we'd be shoved to the front of the line, but no, we had to wait until they finished wiring Norristown. And the equipment they gave us - I think it just came off lease from a Somalian refugee camp. The keyboards are full of all kinds of schmutz - betel nut seeds, sticky fishhead sauce - and there are no flat screen monitors. What's worse, they block some of the good websites. But, finally getting wired does give me a chance to tell you what's what.

Before I forget, call me 'Pop' if we meet up here some day. Not 'Pops' - I get a little edgy when people call me that - and I want us all to be friends. Most of you will arrive here some day. Well, not all - they are pretty particular about admitting pushy insurance agents and financial advisors; a lot of them get turned away and end up - you know where - at that big shvitz in the sub-basement.

For the rest of you, don't be afraid about meeting me some day because it's not that bad up here, aside from the lousy Internet connection. They have a Jewish Wing for those who think it's important to be among their own people; sorry, but Reform, Conservative and Orthodox are all mixed together which means that they sometimes serve bacon bits at the Oneg Shabbat. It is what it is. They have a candy drop every year, although they just drop slices of halvah wrapped in wax paper because of stricter insurance requirements. They have a pretty competitive softball league and they don't allow those lousy aluminum bats - that's a big plus. No flush toilets because most of the plumbers get turned away at the gate; instead we have these giant outhouses - do not enter without a fly swatter. Fortunately, a lot of our SGF boys learned to hold it in for weeks.

But - and pay attention to this - up here we look exactly as we did on the day that we died. In my day, we pretty much believed that when you went to heaven, you reverted to the best looking day of your life, but that just isn't so. It's a real horror show! Did you know that whiskers continue to grow for a few days after the body dies? So even if we were clean-shaven the day we cashed-in, we all have a three day beard growth. The men look like that guy from 'Miami Vice' - what's his name - Don Johnson.

It's worse for the women. All previous marriages are null and void up here, so you can start all over - or play the field. Great, I thought - up here we could pick from the creme de la creme - the kind of girl who wouldn't even talk to us in high school. Hah! Those 'untouchable' girls are 89 years old - minimum - with too much hair spray, hair dye, crusty makeup, and those little chin whiskers. And none of them drive at night. Even worse, most of them waited too long between hair colorings, so you see a lot of gray or black roots up here. Tell your wife or girlfriend to get her hair color touched up every other week when she suspects that cash-in time is near.

So we end up watching a lot of TV sports, but - I kid you not - our cable only carries Bengals and Reds games. Maybe the channels are better in the sub-basement.

Back to SGF. I'm so proud of the traditions that you have kept going, proud that you want to give to others what you once were given. Do the best you can and cheer for our camp, boys.

Pop

Yet another love-in. I appreciate the kudos.

Coincidentally, Myles was installed in the SGF Counselor Hall of Fame today. This was done before he wrote nice things.

I was at SGF for 5 summers from 1962 - 1967. Loved Indian Ridge and Casset Hill. Candy Drop and Indian Ceremonial.
I was also on the ill-fated trip to Canada and the Montreal Expo, where Uncle Walt and Doug crashed while out for supplies, and as a result, Doug died. It was tragic, and we were all scared and in shock. It could have been any of us. On top of that, Walt's brother drove up to rescue us and we completed out trip with him to the Expo.

That was in '67, right? I had heard about that but didn't know whether it was true or just SGF legend.

I hope that everybody will look at the Staff page:

http://sgfvc.com/sgf_counselors2.htm

We'd love to have more people send in their pictures of staff, campers, SGF events, whatever. We posted every picture that we had.

Hey guys: Mark is leading this redo. I'm not doing any of the creative work - just a sounding board. The torch has been past. And the new site is wonderful - I love it. Really good quality work Mark!

Scott, a lot of us drove the car, but you provided the vehicle. As always thanks for your hard work. You had one helluva torch to pass.

As long as this little lovefest is going on, I have to second Spencer's kudos to Scott Kleiman. He designed and built the original, acquired the Guestbook, and has kept it running. I just chamfered the edges of what Scott built.

I like the look of the site now. Easier to navigate, and more "professional" looking, for lack of a better word. wink

Today, I had a warm feeling about the times I spent at SGF from 1964 to 1969. I was wondering if there was anything on the net about the camp and found this site. It sure brought back even more warm feelings.
Hi to Uncle Barry and Uncle Wally

just saw your note Larry. I do remember your name!!
So many people are thinking about their past and discover this site. So kudos to those that maintain the site. and welcome to those who suddenly refind their past. You only also have to know that the Re SGFers Saved the campsite from developers !!! so More Kudos to them.

(739) So this is where all the old SGF-ers have been hanging out? Thanks, Google!

smile Hello Uncle Shorty - take a look at post no. 718. Glad to see you're doing well in Lakeland, FL. You were one of my favorite counselers - my second year at SGF, probably in 1961 or 1962. Hope you remember me.

I think I do -- Artie -- skinny kid with pointy little nose? -- but I wish I could find my photos from 1962 to be sure. We'll have to compare notes sometime.
