Today, I saw Neal Goldberg for the first time in a long time. When I last saw him, he was 27 and I was 24. He is commonly known as "the magic man". We were standing on Lincoln Road on Miami Beach, where he sells his crystals artefacts, jewelry, etc. every Sunday. I am writing this only because something very interesting happened while I was with him. A homeless woman came up to me and showed me the laminated business card he made for her with her photo and name on it. I was very touched to see that.

Of course I can't stop there. Ican just hear Spencer now saying uh oh here he goes w/his Uncle Skins story.......
Well here goes. Uncle Wiggly you never heard it from me so this for you.
One night 1969 3rd trip I heard this sound coming from the flagpole. The next morning i asked Skins what it was and he went on to explain it's this band called The Grateful Dead...the HIPPIES follow them all over the country. Wow how cool is that. It wasn't until a few years later that I heard that same sound and well 143 shows and some 30 yrs. later that was part of my adventure. So know that Uncle Wigs,NealG. Skins, all the Hippie chicks, etc.,at SGF in the late 60's and early 70's helped shape our childhood and contributed grately to our American Adventure.

Imagine that Good ol'Uncle Wiggly. You speak of that 1969 summer. Skins,Neal G.,ETC.,ETC.. Imagine the excitement of a bunch of Jewish boys from Phila. that for the 1st time leave home and are now told they're Native American Indian(actually i was an Apache-Bunk A 3rd trip 1969--oh yea!!) We come upon this gravesite of the great JewishIndian Chief --Schmohawk..dig him up and there's Wiggly w/his skull amazing. And that started the Adventure.....

I was the nature guy at SGF from 1968-1970, also known as 'Uncle Wiggly'. I took a look at your Web site and read some of the entries in the Discussion. It brought back fond memories and friendships with Neil and Sandee Goldberg ('68-'69), Len and Gail Sosnov ('70), Marc Antonio Squarito (Skins), Les Perlstein, 'Lemon' (can't recall his name), Chanin brothers (Howard and Steve), and many others. Neil was fantastic--he introduced the counter culture and brought the 1960s to us. In 1969, Sandee and Les's girlfriend (what was her name?) went to Woodstock and came back transformed and brought the excitement to all of us. I remember taking the campers gold panning in the creek (I salted some of the pebbles with gold paint, unfortunately the paint was a bit soluble in water). And then there were the 'archeological digs' where I would pull up a skull given to me by Lemon and let out a primeval scream. Took a few hours to get all the campers returned. One time, a camper got to the skull before me and we had a tough time getting the skull returned. And then there were the survival meals of root bear and dandelion salad. The pioneering guys would bring steaks and that always saved the day. Fun times. I now work at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va. as a Web Developer/Content Specialist. Still active with organizations dealing with environment al problems (Board member of MD Sierra Club) and natural history.

Wow! Uncle Wiggly.. I have been telling this story of that 1969 summer for so long. Actually, during SGF2008 last summer I painted a bunch of pebbles gold and they led the way to our Indian Ceremony. I also burried a bunch of bones for the SGF 2008 campers to dig up. So Uncle Wigs, know that your legacy lives on.

Lots of memories and great stir fry! Please rsvp me if you can make it. I'll need to know by Tuesday. razz (stick out tongue)

I remember loving and hating SGF. Each summer, I attended as did my brother and 2 first cousins (also brothers). My last summer, however, my cousin bunked on "the hill" while I (2 months younger) remained in the same location as all prior summers. I was so angry that for the entire 3 week stay, I never changed my clothes. To this day I remember eating, sleeping, swimming, hiking, showering in blue shorts and a yellow (with blue logo) cub scouts undershirt.

No can do on 3-15 but would love to bring my kids by sometime in the not too distant future.
My clothes (which never left my body for 3 weeks) were quite clean. Remember I showered and swam in them - then they drip dried.

Thanks, Mark. This is a genuine honor for me. I have been telling people for more than 40 years that, apart from my upbringing, my SGF experience was the most important and formative influence in my life. Many of the counselors on this site were instrumental in creating that reality. I will be forever grateful for that.

I can't tell you how happy I was to happen onto your website. I have nothing but wonderful memories of my time at SGF.

From playing on Terry Dane's Canadians to the car-pull in the Maccabee Games, from the Doctor Ron Rhodes to Murray Kramer scaring the crap out of everyone at Indian Ceremonial, from surviving Bunk Featherhead to watching the Taj get hit by lighting, SGF left indelible memories in me. I will dig up some photos, scan them and send them. Thanks for keeping SGF going.

Does anybody remember those winter weekend encampments which first started in the mid 1960's? We were housed in the only two heated bunks in the camp - Bunks I and K. As I was out and about today, I was thinking about those cold and beautiful days at the camp. What great memories! wink wink wink wink

It was a collaborative effort between Uncle Shorty and me. We found that two half-wits equal one full wit. Of course, he went to Central High.

Hopefully, contacting his sister will draw him out of the woodwork.

There was a mix-up - two restaurants with similar names. Karl assured us that this restaurant is pristine, and I confirmed that via the Internet. However, since I rented the cockroach for two months, it seems like a waste of money to remove it.

Check out post no. 128 from Neal's sister. As of a couple of years ago he was living in Jamaica. He should definitely be included on the all star counselor list and I was never in any of his bunks. I just sent her a request to see what she can do to ask him to check in. I would love to hear from him.

A lot of the campers from the '50s must have early dementia because they're missing in action. I was there when you were, but I was only eight years old, so not on the Hill. My grandmother asked a Hill kid - Jerry Bratman - to look after me. Does that name ring a bell?

Anyway, please look around the website, post more memories, even get involved in rebuilding the camp.

Al (may I call you Al?),

Your new head looks great. Don't let them mock you or Cary. You look like a younger version of that movie guy - what's his name? - Curly.

I was prematurely bald when I founded Troop 95. I like to think that I started an SGF tradition: Boozie, Hoff, Brait, Blass, Dorfman, Kleiman (not sure about Dempsey's nephew - he usually wears a cap - what's he hiding?), and now Saionz. We had a guy in Troop 95 - Jules Frumkin. Jules was as bald as a cue ball by the time he was 19, but he dressed sharp, smelled of Ed. Pinaud cologne and always did well with the ladies.

But Al - this is important - Jules never locked himself out of his car. Next Overnighter, pin your keys to your boxer shorts. It worked for Jules.

Make it great!

Oh yes. Go Steelers! 27-23!

There may be multiple versions of a song, although the SGF anthem ought to be constant. I'll pose the question to our patriarch Uncle Herman. In the meantime, I added Cary's version to the Songs and Traditions website page.

Ted Radinsky just posted this version "Cheer for our camp boys, our camp must win. She's a corker with lots of vim god bless her all those will surely flee when we begin to fight cheer for camp SGF."

The SGF anthem has popped to the top of the critical list, now that my net worth has tanked and is out of control.

big grin big grin big grin To my SGF Bretheren:
I want to take this moment to personally and publically thank all of the fantastics counselors and Staff Men that showed me the way. Without thier mentoring and modeling of roles I would not have succedded as a counselor myself. So here goes...To Boozie,Lemon,Soz, Barry Brait,Slim(I was in your bunk),Lou Nise,Mike Epstein,Wally Loeb,Hoff( I was in your bunk too) Shorty,O'neal, Walt Myers,Skins,Les Pearlstein,Mel Drukin,Marv Weber,John Flanagan, and a thousand I can't remember I thank you all. Thanks for showing up in my life and the lives of countless of thousands of Underprivledged boys just like me.You've blessed my life and given all of us New board members the stuff it takes to give back the SGF experience to another generation of SGF'ers....Bless you and Thank You!!
