I recently saw Murray Kramer in a performance of Damn Yankees. The show was great fun and Murray was just as I remembered him; funny, spontaneous and irreverent, hamming it up and stealing the show. Seeing Murray up there on stage doing his thing took me right back to my days as a camper in his bunk, (1972, Bunk 1), and I am reminded of the positive impact he had upon me and how great he made my camp experience.

My seven year old boy was so excited to meet Murray after the show (see photo) that he talked about it for days. Murray continues to be a kind of pied-piper for kids, inspiring the next generation, just as he had inspired us back then.

PS: Lola was great, but she was no Marty Eisenberg. razz (stick out tongue)

I attended SGF twice in 1962 and 1963,or 1964.Both on the third trip.Being from south Philly it was a fabulous diversion for me.I loved the daily routine. The pool with the slide, the games, etc.I especially remember O'Neal who acted like a crazed wrestler. The counselors O'Neal included would stage fake fights and we got the biggest kick out of them.It was like our own WWE.at camp.I also remember the fun we had on our overnight hikes and how they would tell us the story of the "Collegeville Killer" ,and then one of the counselors would would come from out of the woods to scare us.I have great memories of SGF.

(554) I attended SGF from 1949 to about 1953. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Uncle Marty was the head counselor and his wife Aunt Laney was a knockout. Uncle Sol Jeck and Uncle Don ran Indian Ceremonials that were something to see. Uncle Bones was a charadcter of the highest order.I was on Indian Ridge and my older brother Don was up on Casset Hill. The place was beautiful and so well kept back then. They were the days my freinds!!!!!

I was there 1951-56. Same cast of characters. I forgot about Uncle Bones 'til you mentioned him in your post. And Aunt Lainey... she was the tops.

You can see some of them on http://home.ptd.net/%7Emblass/061203_sgf_24th/

Saul Jeck (yeah, I also thought his name was Sol) is in pictures #11 and #12 wearing a light brown sweater.

I can't say it enough - SGF was among the best times when I was a kid.

The SGF Sponsorship has sprouted.
Mike Wolf/Spencer ...Please share this info on the site. I must selfishly say that it has made me feel good to know that I am now helping a child get to camp.

I was at SGF in summer 1972 and would love to revisit the site. Is it accessible? And if my memory is correct, is the site only a few blocks from Methacton High School and Collegeville Inn?

Fred, It is private property now, but some people visit and the owner's are generally friendly. Go down to Methacton High/Jr. High going west on Germantown Pike it will be on your right. When you make that right the schools will be on your left side. Go to stop...make a left and then a right and you're there.

I remember being whisked into the mess hall in the middle of the night told to set the table and whisked back to my bunk. I asked about it the next morning and my couselor said I must have been dreaming...

Does anyone else have this memory?

Hey MIKE K
This is Great---I finally found someone from back then that actuall went to camp with me...I went back to steal that placque many years ago...If I only knew that I shuld have taken more. My memory is choppy from back then. Do you remember the cat peeing in the counselors bed...Do you remember me short-sheeting Biffs Bed? I think it was Biff...
Anyway give a call some time---
MICHAEL GLASS

I remember hating the way the placque turned out-No one would help do it...But I forget who it was that finally did help me do it-it may have been Stephen---Now that placque is a treasure.

I went to SGF i think 60 and 61. My second year something happened that i will never forget. While playing softball, i was in the on deck circle swinging a bat and someone came up behind me and i swung and hit him in the head. I remember it like it happened yesterday. Everyone was send back to there bunk for the night.
Well, after that i went to Rockhill from 71 to 79 and got to run Pocono Highlands Camp from 80 to 93. Greatest times of my life..
Met my wife at Pocono Highlands and got married at Akiba.
Your site is amazing and SGF was the beginning of a lifetime experiences.
Its something that if you didnt go to your dont get, but for everyone that ever went to camp its a common bond that just makes you smile.

My brother Brian forwarded me this website. I am glad to see that there is one. I looked at all of the pitures in the Photo Gallery and it brought back a lot of memories. Does anyone know what year these were taken? I visited the camp in the late 1980s as I was in the area. At that time the Mess Hall was still there and it still had bunk plaques hanging on the walls. My brother and I actually attended SGF from 1971 thru 1976 and, we usually were there during the 1st and 3rd encampments. I remember a lot of the people my brother mentioned in one of his previous messages. In particular, I found Steve "Ramps" Rosen and Marty Isenberg as positive influences. The first bunk the I was in was Commanche (C). I remember Brian Snyder and, I believe, Steven Needle from that bunk. My last bunk was the Taj that included Gary Schwartz whom I met the previous summer. After camp those two summers he invited me to stay with family members that he had in Atlantic City. In between I made a lot great friends amongst the campers and staff whose names escape me. Perhaps some of you remember me? Amongst the staff I do remember Fran Vitable who worked in the office and Dean Artiotis (sp) who was head the Ridge at some point. I believe Fran and Dean got married. Has anyone heard from them? At one point Dean made a sign-in card for me to bring to my scheduled activities to verify my attendance. He did this because I spent my days around the office. This didn't last long as an order camper my the name of Mike Swan tore it up. It's funny the things that you remember. Such as the time a camper by the name of Cary (perhaps Aronson) hurt his leg during a Macabee Games activity. I see the you have signed the Guestbook so, let me know if this was you. Anyway, it geat that SGF has this website! I am going to spend some time reading through the Guestbook. I look forward to hearing from fellow campers and staff. Thank you.

Wow! I looked for an SGF site several times over the past few years. I never found it, so I am glad it found me. It has been so long, that many names escape me. I was a camper 72-74 I think I was in 5, 7 and Taj, and a CC or something in 76. I was at Camp Council 77-79. That is where the picture is from, 77, I just spent about 1/12 hours reading through the guestbook. The names I remember...Bruce Lefkoe and Eric Felt (also from 2 & C and Finletter) Marty Eisenberg, a big positive influence on my life back then - I saw you just before moving to MD in 1988 and you gave me a name of a friend who was a bail bondsman - Murray Kramer, a great storyteller - sorry I missed Damn Yankees - John & Judy Flanagan and Ron Rhoads fron West Catholic? John passed away? Alka Seltzer my counselor one year - he went to Lehigh U, Steve 'Ramps' Rosen - my first counselor and a 2 & C homeboy - he went to Bloomsburg, Terry Dane & Dane Cherry - the same person?? and Myles Kaufman (Myles Long?)- we were co-counselors at CC in 77, Neil Dolinsky - Central HS. My brother Michael was also a camper 72-76. Sorry, I will miss the reunion, going to be in Orlando. Where are you Eddie Fischer? Anyone remember the nurse Elsa and her daughter? Thanks for finding me Cary. How did you find me?

Brian - I remember you from 2nd &C. We were never in the same class at Finletter. You must have been in the smart classes. A lot of us poor 2nd&C guys went to SGF. Between Bnai Brith and Sports,I'm still in Contact with most of my friends from the neighborhood. Maybe I'll see you at a future SGF Reunion.

Hi Eric. Good to hear you are still in contact with the 2&C gang. I left the area in 78 and have been away from Philly with the exception of 86-87. I won't be at this reunion, but am looking forward to others. I remember aleays looking forward to the winter reunions the years i went to SGF. Nothing but fond memories. I am trying to get my daughter, who is 12, to understand how much fun overnight camp can be. She's not ready yet.

I had either Irving Brick or Irvin Brick as a bunkmate one year. This gentleman may have been an SGF-er, but not the same kid from my era (he would be as old as my parents, and I am as old as your parents).
